I've read so many articles online saying that Friendster will be shutting down by the end of May this year. For the record, there's a tad difference between "shutting down" and "wiping out". The latter is what will happen to social networking pioneer Friendster on May 31, 2011. Seriously.
No, Friendster is NOT shutting down on May 31. And, yes, it will be WIPING OUT all our photos, testimonials, shoutouts, groups, etc. But, decent of them, they are giving us an option of backing up our files (photos, testimonials, blah blah) using the Friendster Exporter app. This application basically just transfers/exports your profile info, friends list, messages, photos, comments, testimonials, shoutouts, blogs, and groups. Options include porting these contents to Flickr or Multiply. So if you wish to back your Friendster files up, do so before May 31.
Geez. I cannot believe the people behind Friendster actually decided to do such thing. Well, to be perfectly honest, I kinda saw this one coming. I mean, since the birth of Facebook, Friendster was like unceremoniously taken down to the bottom of the pit, if you know what I mean. But still, it feels so bad that something you shared your high school life with will have to go away, just like that. But, yeah, Friendster became the underdog, the one who gets bullied when Facebook arrived. It actually has been made as subject of quite a few internet jokes like this one:
Friendster was like the first ever social networking website that I joined. (Actually, I think it is the FIRST ever social networking website.) It was actually where I started blogging. God, I'm gonna miss Friendster. Seriously. It may not be leaving the internet scene, but it would be reinventing itself as a service focused on "entertainment and fun"--more games, less to absolutely no social networking, and the Friendster we used to know (and love) will cease to exist anymore.
